Legendary Chinese photographer Lu Nan shook the world with his pictures of people living on the edge of despair. It took Lu 15 years to complete his trilogy of photographs, three sets of a total of 225 pictures,  the first set about patients at mental hospitals, the second set about the pilgrimage of Chinese Catholic devotees, and the third set about the life of Tibetan peasants. He said it would be enough for him if his pictures were appreciated by five people in the next 25 years.
When accused of being only interested in the underprivileged,  he said that he is interested in men, and they happened to be mental patients, Catholic devotees and Tibetans in this case.”Human lives should not be labeled. Labels cover our eyes and make many things invisible to us,” Lu said.
He rarely attends public occasions, and often refuses to be photographed himself. He also has a habit of signing his works under different names and giving up his copyright  claims on some works. “It is enough to enjoy the art work. Publicity is meaningless for an artist,” he said, adding that “if the pictures are good, it doesn’t matter who took them, and if the pictures are not good, it also doesn’t matter who took them.”
